denotation the dictionary meaning of a word
connotation a word's tone; the emotions or associations it normally arouses in people
literal usage the "real" or logical meaning of a word
figurative usage/metaphorical usage using words in a symbolic (or nonliteral) way
synonyms words that have the same or almost the same meaning
antonyms words that mean the opposite or almost the opposite of each other
context clues words or phrases around an unknown word that lead us to its meaning
restatement clue a synonym for or a definition of the unknown word
contrast clue an antonym for or a phrase that means the opposite of the unknown word
inference clue word or phrase that implies the meaning of the unknown word, but does not directly state the meaning
