After finding white doctors who could treat her, why didn't Melba become completely better? None of the nurses treated her with Epsom salts and warm water after her surgery.
When was the first time Melba was exposed to segregation? At five years old, she went to a Fourth of July picnic. She went to a merry-go-round, but was then yelled at for being colored and could not ride.
Who are Melba's parents and what did they do? Mother Lois was a teacher and Father Howell was a hostler's helper for Missouri Pacific Railroad.
Who is Conrad? Melba's brother.
What did Mother Lois constantly remind her husband to do? If Howell have finished college, he would have a professional job that paid more.
What happened when the Patillo family went to the market? The grocer, Mr. Waylan. overcharged them over $22. When the family tried to speak up, they were then yelled at.

Why wasn't Melba able to finish school? (Second first day) The crowd outside of the school broke the barricades and it was no longer safe for the kids.
What happened after the (second) first day of school? The 101st Airborne Division was sent to Central for protection.
What is the name of the 101st soldier who protected Melba? Danny.
Why couldn't Melba get help from other officials is she was harassed? The rule was they would only take charge if there was an adult witness (other than a soldier)
What happened when Melba tried to used the restroom? She was locked in a stall and attacked with flaming paper.
What was thrown at Melbas' face that nearly destroyed her eyesight? Acid
Who helped Melba when Acid was thrown in her face? Danny rinsed her eyes with water.
What happened when the parents on the nine met with Superintendent Blossom? Mother Lois interrupted to discuss the protection of the children against segregationist students.
What was Minnijean excluded from doing? Auditioning for glee club and school show and other singing activities
Who was the only one who showed up to Melba's birthday party? Vince.
Why didn't any of Melba's friends from Horace Mann show up? Ann's Christmas party was the same day and they were too scared to go to her house.
Who told Melba why no one who go to her birthday? Marsha.
Why couldn't Melba go with Vince to Ann party? Two white men, Mutt and Jeff, stayed outside her house.
Why was Minnijean suspended? During lunch white boys were verbally harassing her, as she tried to walk past one tripped her causing chili to spill on them.
Why was Minnijean expelled? She was accused of attacking white students?
Where was Minnijean sent to after expulsion? The NAACP officials gave Minnijean a scholarship to New Lincoln High School in New York and would live with the family of Dr. Kennath Clark, a psychologist.
Who was Andy? A boy who harassed and threatened to kill Melba?
One day, after school, Melba was almost attacked by Andy. Who helped Melba escape? Link.
How did Melba escape? Link placed the keys on the trunk and pretended to help Andy, as a distraction, then Melba took the keys and the car home.
Why and how did Link help Melba? Link attended segregationist meetings which provided information for Melba. He felt guilty and sad for the way people treat the negros.
Why were senior activities cancelled? The officials thought trouble who occur due to interrogation.
Why did Link ask Melba for help? He wanted to convince his Nana Healey to go see a doctor.
Who is Nana Healy? Link's nanny who was with his family since she was a young girl. She then became sick with tuberculosis and was fired.
Why couldn't Mother Lois renew her teaching contract? Because Melba attended Central High. It was a way for the segregationist to prevent Melba from finishing the school year.
How did Mother Lois get her job back? She wrote to newspaper about her story and help from bishop O.J. Sherman.
Who was the first negro to graduate Central? Ernie.
What did Link insist Melba to do? Go with him to Harvard University.
What was the highest award the NAACP gave to the 9? Spingarn Medal.
How did Grandma India die? Grandma India was diagnosed with Leukemia.
After the court ruled that Central would stay interrogated, what did Governor Fabus do? Close all the schools in Little Rock.
Who were the only two Negros that were admitted into Central after it reopened? Carlotta Walls and Jefferson Thomas, who the graduated.
To finish her education, where did the NAACP send Melba sent to? Dr. George McCabe and Carol McCabe in Santa Rosa. They were Quakers with four children who believed in race equality.
Where did Melba attend college? University of San Francisco and Columbia's State University School of Journalism .
Who was Melba's husband and how did they meet? John was Melba's husband. She met him when he went on a date with her roommate Mary.
Why did Melba divorce John? He was a farmer and wanted her to be a housewife and have babies.
Who is Melba's daughter? Kellie.
What did Melba want to become? A news reporter.
Who is Mrs. Daisy Bates? Arkansas state president of the NAACP.
Who was the important figure that hindered the 9 from going to central? Governor Fabus.
What did Conrad grow up to become? The first and only black captain of the Arkansas State Troopers.
