Narrative Elements

antagonist the character who opposes the main character
character development the way the writer creates and develops characters
climax the most exciting part of the story
conflict the opposition of forces, essential to the plot
exposition part of story where characters are introduced, background is explained and setting is described
falling action all events after the climax and leading to the resolution
first person the narrator is part of the story or a character
static character the type of character who does NOT change
plot development the sequence of events of a narrative story
point of view the perspective
protagonist the central, main character of a story
resolution the end of the conflict
rising action all events leading up to the climax
dynamic character the type of character who develops throughout the story
setting the time and location in which a story takes place
theme a message about life or human nature that the author wants the reader to understand
third person limited narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of only one character, but describes the actions of other characters
third person omniscient narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of more than one character
foreshadow give readers clues about what may happen later in the story
flashback when an author refers back to something that already happened in the past
mood the atmosphere around a literary work with the intention of creating a certain emotion or feeling from the reader
tone an attitude of a writer toward a subject or audience
external conflict a conflict that occurs outside the character
internal coflict a conflict that occurs inside the character
irony the opposite of what is expected
