Progressive Era Test

Who were the muckrakers? Explain the effect the muckrakers had on American life. Muckrakers were writers that focused on the need for reform.
Define suffrage. Why did progressive women demand suffrage? Suffrage is the right to vote. Progressive women demanded suffrage because they believed it was the only way to make sure the government would protect children, foster education, and support family life.
Who were Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois? What different ideas did they hold? Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois were African American Rights Activists. Booker T. Washington said blacks should move slowly toward racial progress, while W.E.B. DuBois said blacks should immediately demand all the rights guaranteed by the Constitut
What was the Pure Food and Drug Act? Which government agency enforces this act, and how does it do so? The Pure Food and Drug Act placed controls on Food and medicine; It banned interstate shipment of impure food and the mislabeling of food and drugs. Congress enforced this act.
Define the Sixteenth Amendment. How did it help the government? The Sixteenth Amendment allowed the Congress to lay and collect taxes on incomes. It helped the government by allowing them to keep an army and build roads/bridges.
What areas did progressives think were in need of the greatest reform? Some areas progressives thought were in need of reform are political reform, government, big business, and harsh mining conditions.
How did women of the Progressive Era make progress and win the right to vote? Women of the Progressive Era won the right to vote by coming up with plans and proposing ideas to the government.
What steps did Wilson take to increase the government's role in the economy? First, Wilson convinces Congress to pass The Underwood Tariff Act, then pushed Congress to pass the Federal Reserve Act to increase the governments role in economy.
