Chapter 3 Math Terms for Mr. Bates

numerator the number above the line in a fraction
denominator the number below the line in a fraction
mixed number a number that written using both a whole number and a fraction
improper fraction a number written with the numerator being greater than the denominator
equivalent fraction fractions that name the same number
benchmark a well-known number that can used to check whether other numbers make sense
number line a line with numbers marked in order on it
fractional part a part of a whole
fraction a number represented as a/b or "a over b", where a and b are integers, and b isn't 0
equivalent fractions fractions that are equal to each other, 1/2 = 2/4
