| Iambic Pentameter | Peotry containing 10 syllables per line -- stressed/unstressed, stressed/unstressed |
| Soliloquy | Lines in a play in which a character speaks while alone on stage, revealing thoughts to the audience |
| Tragedy | A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, or moral weakness |
| Tragic Hero | The main character or hero in a story whose own actions cause his or her downfall |
| Pun | An expression utilizing a play on words -- often meant to be humorous |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two unalike things for the purpose of description |
| Simile | A comparison between two unalike things using the words like or as for the purpose of description |
| Personification | The attribution of human qualities to non-human things |
| Dramatic Irony | The audience or reader knows more about a character's situation than the character does & knows that the character's understanding is incorrect |
| Situational Irony | A situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended |
| Verbal Irony | When a person says or writes one thing & means another, or uses the word to convey a meaning that is opposite of the literal |
| Anachronism | The misplacing of a person, object, or situation outside of its correct historical line; in Julius Caesar, the Clock |
| Allusion | A reference to a mythological, literacy, or historical person, place, or thing. |
| Climax | The highest point of action in the play; the turning point |
| Imagery | Words & phrases that appeal to the 5 senses |
