Nail Diseases / Disorders

Nail Disorder caused by injury/disease of the nail unit
Bruised Nail Beds blood clots for under the nail plate/dark purplish spot
Eggshell Nails thin white nail plates extremely flexible/longer free edges will be weak with significant curve
Beaus Lines visible depressions running across the width of the nail plate
Hangnail aka Agnail / living skin around the nail plate splits and tears
Leukonychia spots white spots/ discoloration found inside the nail plate caused by minor injury to the matrix
Melanonychia darkening of the fingernails or toenails could be a band or even entire nail plate common in darker skin types possible cancerous in fairer
Onychophagy nail biter
Onychorrhexis split/brittle nails that have a series of lengthwise ridges/ can have a rough surface appearance
Plicatured Nails "folded nail' highly curved nail plate can lead to ingrown nails
Nail Pterygium abnormal condition that occurs when skin is stretched by the nail plate
Ridges mild/ running vertically down the length of the natural nail plate are actually grooves and not ridges at all
Splinter Hemorrhages caused by physical trauma or injury to the nail bed that damages the capillaries and allows small amounts of blood flow / appears red/brown/black splotches under the nail plate
Pincer Nail / Trumpet Nail deep/sharp curvature of the free edge /nail curls upon itself and may only happen on one sidewall
Nail Diseases show signs of infection or inflammation/if visible refer to Dr immediately/ Do not touch
Onychosis any deformity or disease of the nails
Onychia inflammation of the nail matrix followed by shedding of the natural nail plate
Onychocryptosis Ingrown nail / nail grows into the sides of the tissue around the nail
Onycholysis lifting of the natural nail plate without shedding
Onychomadesis separation and falling off of the nail plate from the bed
Nail Psoriasis tiny pits or severe roughness on the surface of the nail plate
Paronychia bacterial inflammation of the tissues surrounding the nail/ redness pus and swelling are usually seen in the skin fold adjacent to the nail plate
Pyogenic Granuloma severe inflammation of the nail in which a lump of red tissue grows up from the nail bed to the nail plate
Tinea Pedis fungal infectrion of the feet/appears red itchy rash in the space between the toes with a small degree of scaling
Onychomycosis fungal infection of the nail plate/appears as whitish patches that can be scraped off the surface of the nail / also appear as long whitish or pale yellowish streaks within of the nail plate / crumbling free edge
Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial infection "greenies"
