| Foil | a character who serves as a contrast to another perhaps more primary character, so as to point out specific traits of the primary character. |
| Flashback | a conversation, episode or event that occurred before the story began. |
| Foreshadowing | a writer’s use of hints or clues to indicate what will happen later in the story. |
| Genre | a type of literature (examples: fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, science fiction, romance, historical fiction, prose, poetry) |
| Hyperbole | an exaggeration of a truth for emphasis or humor |
| Imagery | descriptive words and phrases that appeal to one or more of the reader’s five senses to help the reader imagine exactly what is being described. |
