| Indirect characterization | characterization in which the reader must draw conclusions about the character based on what a character looks like, does, or says and how other characters react to him or her. |
| Euphemism | an inoffensive or indirect expression that is substituted for one that is considered offensive or too harsh. |
| Exposition | the part of the plot that is in early part of the story. The exposition sets the tone, establishes the setting, introduces the characters, and gives background information. |
| Falling action | all events that occur after the climax of a story leading to the resolution of the story. |
| Framework story | a story within a story |
| Figurative language | language that communicates beyond the literal meanings of words: simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole |
| First person point of view | a point of view in which the narrator is within the story and uses the pronouns “I”, “me,” and “my.” |
