Plate Tectonics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Continental Drift | The hypothesis that states that the contents once formed a single landmass, broke up, and drifted to their present locations. |
| Pangaea | Pangea was a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. It assembled from earlier continental units approximately 335 million years ago, and it began to break apart about 175 million years ago. |
| Sea floor Spreading | formation of new areas of oceanic crust, which occurs through the upwelling of magma at midocean ridges and its subsequent outward movement on either side. |
| Plate Tectonics | a theory explaining the structure of the earth's crust and many associated phenomena as resulting from the interaction of rigid lithospheric plates that move slowly over the underlying mantle. |
| Convergent Boundary | When two Tectonics plates collide, the boundary between them is a convergent boundary. |
| Divergent Boundary | When two Tectonic plates separate, the boundary between them is called is a divergent boundary. |
| Transform Boundary | When two Tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally, the boundary between them is a transform boundary. |
| Convection Currents | |
| Convection is the heat transfer due to bulk movement of molecules within fluids such as gases and liquids, including molten rock. Convection takes place through advection, diffusion or both. | |
| Wegner | Alfred Lothar Wegener was a German polar researcher, geophysicist and meteorologist. During his lifetime he was primarily known for his achievements in meteorology. |
| Volcano | A vent or fissure in the Earthâs surface through which magma and gases are expelled. |
| Hot Spots | A volcanically active area of earths surface far from a tectonic plate boundary. |
| Mid-Ocean Ridges | Mid-ocean ridge is an underwater mountain system formed by plate tectonics. It consists of various mountains linked in chains, typically having a valley known as a rift running along its spine. |
| Subduction | Subduction is a geological process that takes place at convergent boundaries of tectonic plates where one plate moves under another and is forced or sinks due to gravity into the mantle. |
| Vent | An opening at the surface of the Earth through which volcanic material passes. |
