Mixtures, separation methods, and pure substances
| Term | Definition |

| Mixture | 2 or more types of matter that have been physically combined, but not chemically changed. |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | A mixture that does not look the same throughout. |
| Homogeneous Mixture | A mixture that looks the same throughout. |
| Solution | A mixture in which 2 substances are evenly mixed |
| Solute | The substance that is dissolved in a solvent (solid) |
| Solvent | The substance in which a solute dissolves (liquid) |
| Suspension | Cloudy mixture of 2 or more substances that settle out when left standing for some time |
| Emulsion | A suspension made up of 2 liquids |
| Colloid | A special kind of suspension that does not separate or settle out. |
| Transparent | Allows light to pass through easily |
| Translucent | Semitransparent |
| Opaque | Not see-through; light cannot pass through it |
| Filtration | Separation of particles in suspension using a filter |
| Distillation | Separation of solids from a liquid by evaporating the liquid to a gas, and condensing it back to a liquid. |
