| Vocab. Word | Definition |

| Form | the physical arrangement of the words on the page (length and placement of the lines and the way they are grouped) |
| Stanzas | they way poems are grouped, like paragraphs |
| Free Verse | no strict or formal pattern |
| Alliteration | a repetition of initial consonant sounds in nearby words |
| Rhyme | a repetition of final sounds in two or more words |
| Rhyme Scheme | pattern formed by the rhymes at the end of the lines |
| Onomatopoeia | words that sound like what they are refering to |
| Rhythm | pattern or beat of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry |
| Imagery` | Words that put a picture in your mind including smell, taste, hear, feel, or see |
| figurative language | a technique of imagery that conveys meanings beyond the literal meanings of the words |
| simile | comparison of two different things using like or as |
| metaphor | a direct comparison of two different words |
| Personification | giving human qualities to animals, inanimate objects, or ideas |
