AP Literature terms

grotesque focuses on physically or mentally impaired characters
haiku popular Japanese form of poetry; three lines, with 5, 7, then 5 syllables
half rhyme final consonants rhyme, but the vowel sounds don't
hamartia a tragic flaw or error in judgement
hero/heroine main character; has strength or moral character
heroic couplet two successive lines of rhymed poetry in iambic pentameter
hexameter stanza of 6 lines
homily long speech denouncing someone or something; a story or lecture on a religious moral theme; a didactic lecture
hubris the pride or overconfidence which leads a hero to overlook divine warning or to break moral law
humor writing whose purpose is to evoke laughter
hyperbole exaggeration for effect and emphasis; overstatement
iambic 1 unaccented, 1 accented
iambic pentameter metrical pattern in poetry , consists of 5 iambic feet per line
idioms expressions that don't translate exactly into what a speaker means
imagery devices which appeal to the senses; visual, tactile, auditory, gustatory, olfactory, kinetic; a group of words that create a mental "picture"
