| grotesque | focuses on physically or mentally impaired characters |
| haiku | popular Japanese form of poetry; three lines, with 5, 7, then 5 syllables |
| half rhyme | final consonants rhyme, but the vowel sounds don't |
| hamartia | a tragic flaw or error in judgement |
| hero/heroine | main character; has strength or moral character |
| heroic couplet | two successive lines of rhymed poetry in iambic pentameter |
| hexameter | stanza of 6 lines |
| homily | long speech denouncing someone or something; a story or lecture on a religious moral theme; a didactic lecture |
| hubris | the pride or overconfidence which leads a hero to overlook divine warning or to break moral law |
| humor | writing whose purpose is to evoke laughter |
| hyperbole | exaggeration for effect and emphasis; overstatement |
| iambic | 1 unaccented, 1 accented |
| iambic pentameter | metrical pattern in poetry , consists of 5 iambic feet per line |
| idioms | expressions that don't translate exactly into what a speaker means |
| imagery | devices which appeal to the senses; visual, tactile, auditory, gustatory, olfactory, kinetic; a group of words that create a mental "picture" |
