Key Literary Terms

QuestionAnswer
What is the setting? The time and place of a story, play, or narrative poem.
What is plot? The Plot is what happens in a story, novel, play or narrative poem.
What is conflict? A struggle between characters or between opposing forces.
What is external conflict? External conflict takes place between two characters, between a character and a group, or between a character and something else – such as a monster or a sandstorm.
What is internal conflict? An internal conflict takes place within a character’s mind or heart. A story may have more than one conflict.
What is complication? Problems that come up as characters struggle to reach their goals.
What is the definition of climax? The most exciting or suspenseful part of a story. At the climax, something happens that reveals how the conflict will turn out.
What is resolution? The part of the story in which remaining questions are answered and loose ends of the plot are tied up. The resolution usually comes at the end of the story.
What is suspense? The uncertainty or anxiety a reader feels about what will happen next.
What is foreshadowing? Hints or clues that suggest what will happen later in a story. Foreshadowing helps to build suspense.
What is dialect? A way of speaking that is characteristic of a geographical area or a certain group of people.
What is symbol, or symbolism? A person, a place, a thing, or an event that has meaning in itself and that also stands for something beyond itself.
What is tone? The writer’s attitude toward his or her topic. Tone is conveyed by a writer’s word choice and style.
What is style? The way a writer uses language. Style results from diction, or word choice, as well as from sentence structure and tone.
What is atmosphere or mood? The overall feeling of a work of literature.
What is imagery? Language that appeals to the senses. Most images are visual, but images can appeal to the senses of hearing, touch, taste, and smell, or even to several senses at once.
