| Gender of nouns and articles | Nouns that end in -o or -ema are almost always masculine. Nouns that end in -a, -ad, or -ion are almost always feminine. Common exceptions are: el día, la clase, el mapa. |
| Nouns that refer to persons | take on the gender of the person they refer to. Examples: la mujer, el hombre, la profesora, el profesor, la niña, el niño, la estudiante, el estudiante. |
