chemistry the study of matter and its changes
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
mass the amount of matter that an object contains
volume the amount of space an object occupies
qualitative observation an observation made using descriptions (words)
quantitative observation an observation made using measurement (numbers)
physical property characteristics of matter that can be observed using the 5 senses
chemical property characteristics of matter that can only be observed by changing the matter chemically (ex: flammability)
heterogeneous mixture a mixture that does not look the same throughout
homogeneous mixture a mixture that looks the same throughout but is not chemically bonded
element a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
compound a substance made up of more than one type of element
