| fantasy | imaginative writing; writing in which the author breaks away from reality |
| farce | a totally ridiculous comedy |
| feminine rhyme | double rhyme; two syllables rhyme |
| figurative language | writing or speech not meant to be taken literally; figure of speech |
| first person | subjective point of view when a character relays a narrative using "I" |
| flashback | device by which an author can present action or scenes that occurred before the opening scene in a work |
| flat character | character who is not fully developed by an author; character who has only one outstanding trait or feature, at the most a few distinguishing remarks |
| foil | character who provides a contrast to another character, emphasizing the other's traits |
| folk tale | story which has been composed orally then passed down by word of mouth |
| foot | unit of meter; a metrical foot can have two or three syllables; basic unit of measurement in line of poetry |
| Iamb | metrical foot consisting of one unaccented syllable followed by one accented syllable |
| Trochee | metrical foot consisting of one accented syllable followed by one unaccented syllable |
| Dactyl | metrical foot consisting of one accented syllable followed by two unaccented syllables |
