Data and Statistics
| Term | Definition |

| box plot | a graph that measures the spread of the data, including the 5 number summary |
| center | a statistical measure of data, often the mean or median |
| dot plot | a graph that is used to compare frequency |
| interquartile range | a measure of variability between the first and third quartile |
| median | a measure of center, found by ordering the values from least to greatest and determining the middle number |
| mean | a measure of center, found by finding the sum of the data values and dividing by the number of pieces of data |
| shape | describes the type of graph, including symmetric and skewed |
| spread | the range of data |
| distribution | the collection of all the values for the possible answers to a statistical question |
| mode | the data item that occurs the most often |
| outlier | data points that do not follow the overall pattern in the data set |
| range | the difference between the highest and lowest number in a data set |
| variabiltiy | how many different answers there are to a statistical question |
| histogram | a graph of numerical data that shows data distribution |
| class intervals | intervals which contain some of the possible values of the numerical variable |
| quartiles | values that divide the distribution into four groups, each having an equal amount of data |
| frequency table | displays the possible values of the data set along with the frequency or number of times that value occurs |
| stem plot | a graph that displays data according to its place value |
| percent bar graph | a graph that compares the percentages that each item contributes to the whole |
