epic a long narrative, written in elevated language which relate the adventures of a hero upon whom rests the fate of a nation
epigram witty saying at the end of a poem, about two lines long; brief, witty observation about a person, institution, or experience
epigraph brief quotation at the beginning of a book or chapter
epiphany an awakening; a sudden understanding or burst of insight
epitaph an engraving on a tombstone
epithet nickname or appellation; (i.e. "Helen with the white arms" in the Iliad)
euphemism substitute word(s) that sound better than another; the use of inoffensive or neutral words to describe a harsher, more serious concept
euphony quality of styles marked by pleasing, harmonious sounds; opposite of cacophony
existentialism term applied to a group of attitudes which emphasize existence rather than the essence; sees the inadequacy of human reason to explain the enigma of the universe
exposition introductory material which sets the tone, gives the setting, introduces the characters, and supplies necessary facts
eye rhyme a form of rhyme where the look rather than the sound is important
fable a story written to make a moral point, using animals as characters
fairy tale fictional tale, marked by fantasy and magic, appealing to the imagination
falling action everything that happens in plot between the climax or crisis and the denouement
false dichotomy two extremes in a continuum of intermediate possibilities
