| concrete poetry | typeset layout of the poem suggests the topic |
| conflict | struggle between opposing forces |
| connotation | emotional implications a word may carry; implied meaning |
| consonance | repetition of consonant sounds with differing vowel sounds |
| couplet | pair of rhyming lines written in the same meter |
| crisis | climax or turning point of a story or play |
| dactyl | three syllable foot consisting of an accented syllable followed by unaccented syllables |
| denotation | specific, exact meaning of a word; dictionary definition |
| denouement | the resolution of a plot after the climax |
| deus ex machina | unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly to resolve a situation or untangle the plot |
| dialect | speech peculiar to a region |
