What types of ways did people make a living in New England? fishing, whaling, timber, trade
What effect did the Enlightenment have on the colonies? They experienced an increase in scientific advances
What effect did the Great Awakening have on colonial life? The colonies experienced religious revival
What do Franklin, Newton, and Galileo have in common? They were all part of the Enlightenment
Which two people were the most important in the Great Awakening? George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards
What are these people known for: Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Franklin Locke- life, liberty, property; Voltaire - freedom of speech; Montesquieu - three branches of govt.; Franklin - enlightenment figure in the colonies
How did the Magna Carta, the Glorious Revolution and the English Bill of Rights influence the American colonies? They encouraged the growth of representative government.
What was the significance of the Zenger Trial? It established the concept of freedom of the press.
Which king was forced to sign the Magna Carta because he was taking land and money from people to fund a war? "Bad King John"
Who drew the "Join or Die" cartoon? Ben Franklin drew it to inspire the colonies to unite against the French.
What was one reason that many of the colonists were literate? Their parents wanted them to learn to read the Bible.
What was the primary reason France wanted to colonize North America? They were trading for furs with the Native Americans because beaver fur had become fashionable in Europe.
What was the reason for the conflict between France and England in the Ohio River Valley? France was determined to protect their land claims because the British were beginning to explore in that area and trap for beaver fur.
What battle led to the fall of New France in the French and Indian War? The British capture of Quebec which was the French capital in that area.
List the provisions of the Treaty of Paris 1763. England gets all of the land east of the Mississippi except New Orleans; Spain gets all of the land west of the Mississippi AND the port of New Orleans
What is salutary neglect? during the first half of the 18th century England passed laws about the colonies but didn't bother to enforce them
What was the significance of the Treaty of Paris? It ended the French and Indian War
What was the significance of the Proclamation of 1763? the King was trying to keep the colonists safe from Native Americans west of the Appalachian Mountains
Who was the King of England during the French and Indian War and the years afterward during the Revolution? King George III
What is Parliament? England's chief law making body
