# Math Vocabulary

Absolute Value | A number's distance from zero. |

Composite | A number made of more than 2 factors. |

Equivalent | Equal in value. |

Exponential Notation | A number written with a base and an exponent. |

Inequality | A mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are not equal. |

Integer | Negative and positive whole numbers including 0. |

Percent | Percent means part per 100. |

Prime | A number made of only 2 factors. |

Rational Numbers | A number that can be written as a fraction, without a denominator of 0. |

Reciprocal | Flipping the numerator and denominator of a fraction. |

Unit Rate | A quantity that is one unit. |

Area | The number of square units needed to cover a surface. |

Nets | A two- dimensional figure that can be folded to form a solid. |

Polygon | An enclosed, many sided figure with strait lines. |

Prism | Three dimensional figure made up identical ends and flat faces. |

Surface Area | The sum of the areas of the faces of a 3D figure. |

Vertex | A corner of a point where lines meet. |

Volume | The number of cubic units contained in a three-dimensional object. |

(algebraic) expression | Numbers. symbols, and/or operations grouped together that show the value of something. |

Base | A number that is raised to a power. |

Equation | A number sentence that uses an equal sign. |

Exponent | A number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor. |

Variable | A letter takes the place of a unknown number. |

Mean | The average of a set of numbers. |

Median | The middle number when the numbers are arranged from least to greatest in a set of data. |

Mode | The most repeated number. |

Range | The difference between the greatest and the least value in a set of data. |
