Area

What is area and how can we use it in maths and the real world?

QuestionAnswer
What is area? The measurement of a surface
Formula to calculate area of a quadrilateral? Length x width
SI unit? m2 (meters squared)
Area of a triangle? 1/2 x base x perpendicular height
Area of a circle? pi x r2 (pi x radius squared)
What information do we need to know to find the area? Length and width of the shape
What instruments can be used to measure the sides of the shape? Meter sticks, rulers, trundle wheels
How can the area of a 3D (three dimensional) shape be found? Find each individual area of each shape in the 3D net and add them together to find the total surface area
How can the area of complex shapes be found? Divide the shape into smaller shapes where the area of each individual is easier to find. Add area of smaller shapes together for total area of the complex shape
What would you use to measure the area of a football field? Measure sides with trundle wheel. Use L x W formula to find the area.
