apostrophe addressing someone or something, not present, as though present
apotheosis a larger-than-life presence; god-like paragon worthy of worship
appeal to ignorance the claim that _______ has not been proven
aside a statement delivered by an actor in a way that the other characters on stage are presumed not to have heard him/her
arguments assertions made based on facts, statistics, logical or objective reasoning, hard evidence, etc.
assonance repetition of a vowel sound in two or more words
asyndeton the omission of conjunctions that ordinarily join coordinate words and phrases
aubade a poem about mourning
auditory imagery word choices that appeal to the ear; helps you "hear" the words
autobiography author's own life story
ballad form of verse to be sung or recited; characterized by a dramatic or exciting episode in fairly short narrative
Carpe Diem Latin for "seize the day"; a theme, emphasizes that life is short, time is fleeting
bathos unintentional anticlimax; unintentional shift from the sublime to the ridiculous; results from use of overly elevated language
