variable | a letter that represents a number |

evaluate | find the value of a numerical expression by substituting numbers for variables |

variable expression | combination of numbers and variables joined by arithmetic operations |

perimeter | the measure around a geometric figure |

area | the number of square units contained by a geometric figure |

volume | the number of cubic units contained in a 3 dimensional geometric figure |

Commutative Property | for addition and multiplication, order doesn't matter 3 + a = a + 3 |

Associative Property | for addition and multiplication, grouping doesn't matter (a + 3) + b = a + (3 + b) |

Distributive Property | 4(a + b) = 4a + 4b |

constant | a symbol that always represents the same number ex; 5x + 3 3 is constant |

numerical coefficient | the number portion of a term, always before the variable ex. 3ab 3 is coefficient |

like terms | same variables with the same exponents |

exponential form | term written with exponents |

factored form | no exponents, shown as repeated multiplication |

Product of Powers | if multiplying two or more monomials, add exponents if bases are the same |

perimeter of a rectangle | 2 Lengths + 2 widths |

area of a rectangle | Length times Width |
