Who are the wives of King Amathas? His first wife was Nephele. The second wife is Princess Ino.
Nephele had two children, who are they? A boy named Phrixus and a daughter named Helle
What did Nephele fear? She feared that Ino would kill her Phrixus so that the kingdom would be given to her son.
How did Ino try to kill Phrixus? Ino gathered all the seed-corn, so there would be nothing to harvest. When King Amathas sent the messenger for an oracle, Ino bribed the messenger to declare that corn would grow if they offered Phrixus as a sacrifice,
What happened when Phrixus was taken to the altar? Hermes sent a wonderous ram with pure golden fleece and took away Phrixus and his sister .
As they the ram carrying Phrixus and Helle over the strait between Europe and Asia, what happened to Helle? Helle fell in the water and drowned. Because of this the strat is named the Sea of Helle or Hellespont.
Where did the ram take Phrixus? Phrixus landedon Colchis on the Unfriendly Sea.
What happened on Colchis? Although the people were fierce, they were kind to Phrixus. The Colchian king, Eetes, let him marry one of his daughters.
What happened to the ram who saved Phrixus? Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus and gave the fleece to King Eetes.
Phrixus had an uncle who was a king in_____. Greece
Who took the kingdom away from Phrixus's uncle? His nephew, Pelias.
Who is the rightful heir of Phrixus' uncle? His son, Jason, who had been secretly sent away for safety. However, when Jason was grown he came back to claim the kingdom.
What did an oracle tell Pelias? Pelias would die in the hands of a kinsman (relative) and should look out for anyone who wore a single sandal.
What task did Pelias give to Jason in order to give up the throne? Pelias claims that the dead Phrixus wants them to bring back the Golden Fleece and to bring his spirit home.
Along with many other men in Greece, who accompanied Jason on the voyage? Hercules, Orpheus, Castor, Schilles, Pelus, and the two sons of Boreas (the great north wind). Jason was also helped by Hera.
What is the name of the ship? Argos.
Where was their first stop? Lemnos, an island where only women and an old king lived. His daughter Hypsiple, the leader, spared him.
what happened on the island of Lemnos? The women gave the Argonauts food and clothes before their voyage.
What happened to Hercules during the voyage? Hercules friend, Hylas, was drwn into the water by a sea nymph. As Hercules jumped into the sea, he forgot about the Fleece and the Argo.
Who are the Harpies? Flying creatures with hooked beaks and claws who leave a stench behind them. "Hounds of Zeus".
When the Argonauts beached themselves for the night, who did they meet? Phineus, andold truth-teller who was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo.
What happened to the truth-teller? Zeus became angered with he man because his predictions were always correct. To punish him, he made the Harpies spoil his food.
What did Boreas' sons do to help Phineus? The sons chased after the Harpies and struck it with their swords.
Who stopped the Boreas' sons from killing the Harpies? Iris said they must forebear to kill the Harpies but swore on the river of Styx that the Harpies would not bother Phineus.
What advice did Iris give to Jason? Beware of the Clashing Rocks/Sympleglades which roll against each other when the sea boils. Send a dove, if the dove passes safely, the ship could enter, if the dove was crushed, turn back and give up hope.
Before reaching Colchis, who did the Argonauts pass by? The Amazon warriors and Prometheus who was on a rock with the eagle.
When Hera saw danger in Jason's way who did she go to and what did they do? APHRODITE and Hera agreed that Cupid should make the daughter, Madea, of the Colchian king fall in love with Jason.
What did Madea know how to work. Powerful magic which could save the Argonauts if she chose to.
What did Aphrodite promise Cupid if he followed through with the plan? A ball of shining gold and deep blue enamel.
After Jason introduced himself to King Eetes, the king became angry. Why? King Eetes disliked foreigners.
How did Jason and the Argonauts prove themselves worthy of the Fleece? Jason had to yoke (Harness, collar) King Eetes' two bulls. The bulls feet were made of bronze, breathed fire, and teeth of a dragon. Jason's task was to make them plow the field.
What did Madea give to Jason before he plowed the field? An ointment that could protect him for a day.
What advice did Madea tell Jason if he saw dragon teethed men? To throw a rock at them.
Who was Madea's brother and who killed him? APSYRTUS was killed by madea
How did they obtain the Golden Fleece? Madea sung a magic song
Who helped the Argonauts when they were about to encounter Scylla? Sea nyphms
Who lives on Crete Talus, the last man of th ancient bronze race
What happened to Jason's parents Lelia's made the father kill himself and the mom died of grief
Who does Jason marry after Madea? King Corinth's daughter
Why was Madea exiled? King Corinth believed she would harm his daughter.
Although Madea helped Jason, why did he let her go into exile? He believed it was Aphrodite who truly helped him because she made her fall in love with Jason.
How did Madea kill king corinth's daughter? She sent a robe which was set on fire once she put it on.
What happened to Madea's sons and how did she escape? Madea's sons died and Madea was taken away on a chariot led by dragons.
