TermDefinition
boundary point The endpoint or endpoints of a ray or segment on a number line where an inequality is true
coefficient A number multiplying a variable or product of variables
constant term a number without a variable attached
Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac
equation A mathematical sentence in which two expressions appear on either side of an “equals” sign (=),
evaluate substitute the value(s) given for the variable(s) and perform the operations according to the order of operations
expression a combination of individual terms separated by plus or minus signs.
factor when two or more integers are multiplied
inequality consists of two expressions on either side of an inequality symbol
inverse operation An operation that undoes another operation.
multiplicative inverse a number which when multiplied by x yields the multiplicative identity, 1
quotient the answer to a division problem
ratio compares two quantities by division.
rate A ratio comparing two quantities
reciprocal is a numbers multiplicative inverse
simplify is to write a less complicated expression with the same value
solve to get an answer
term is a single number, variable, or the product of numbers and variables,
unit rate a rate with a denominator of one when simplified
variable A symbol used to represent one or more numbers
