TermDefinition
area area is the number of square units needed to fill up a region on a flat surface.
base surface a solid object stands on, or the bottom line of a shape such as a triangle or rectangle
circumference The perimeter of (distance around) a circle
cross section The intersection of a three-dimensional solid and a plane
degree a unit for measuring angles
diameter A line segment drawn through the center of a circle with both endpoints on the circle
edge a line segment formed by the intersection of two faces of a polyhedron
face One of the flat surfaces of a polyhedron, including the base
inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning
irrational number The set of numbers that cannot be expressed as a fraction
lateral faces a (flat) side of a polyhedron
measurement a standard unit used to express the size, amount, or degree of something.
polygon A two-dimensional closed figure of three or more line segments (sides) connected end to end
polyhedron A three-dimensional figure with no holes for which all faces are polygons.
pi The ratio of the circumference (C) of the circle to its diameter (d). π.
pyramid A polyhedron with a polygonal base formed by connecting each point of the base to a single given point (the apex) that is above or below the flat surface containing the base.
right rectangular prism A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles.
surface area The sum of all the area(s) of the surface(s) of a three-dimensional solid
vertex a vertex is the point at which two line segments meet to form a “corner. the common endpoint of the defining rays.
volume A measurement of the size of the three-dimensional region enclosed within an object
