| rational number | a number that can be written as a/b where a and b are integers |
| whole number | the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 |
| terminating decimal | a decimal that ends 1.5 , 2.58 - 5.605 |
| repeating decimal | a decimal that has a pattern that repeats |
| Integer | the set of whole numbers and their opposites |
| absolute value | the distance between a number and 0 on a number line ; the absolute value of a number a is written as |a| |
| Opposites | two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line , but on opposite sides of the 0 (-3 , 3) are opposites |
| additive inverse | the opposite of a number |
| associative property of addition | changing the grouping of addends does not change the sum |
| associative property of multiplication | changing the grouping of factors does not change the product |
| commutative property of addition | changing the order of addends does not change the sum |
| commutative property of multiplication | changing the order of factors does not change the product |
| distributive property | to multiply a sum or difference by a number , multiply each number in the sum or difference by the number outside the parenthesis than evaluate |
| order of operations | the order in which to perform operations when evaluating expressions with more than one operation |
