natural disasters
| Term | Definition |

| avalanche | a large amount of snow and ice that suddenly falls down a mountain |
| blizzard | a storm with a lot of snow and strong winds |
| drought | a long period of dry and usually hot weather when there is little or no rain, which ruins crops |
| black ice | a layer of ice on a road that is difficult to see and that is very slippery |
| flood | a large amount of water that covers an area or fills buildings |
| hurricane | a violent storm with extremely strong winds and heavy rain |
| lightning | a flash of electricity in the sky |
| storm | an occasion when a lot of rain falls very quickly, often with very strong winds or thunder andlightning |
| thunder | the loud noise that you hear in the sky during a storm |
| tornado | a very strong wind that quickly spins |
| freezing rain | precipitation which falls as rain and then freezes when it hits objects and surfaces on the ground, whose temperature is below freezing |
| hoar frost | frozen water vapour in the form of ice crystals, which form on vegetation or any other object or surface with temperatures below the freezing point |
| wildfire | a fire that starts in an area of countryside and spreads very quickly |
| heatwave | a continuous period of very hot weather, especially when this is unusual |
| ice storm | a winter storm caused by freezing rain, which results in at least 6.4 mm of ice coating on objects and surfaces |
| thunderstorm | a storm with thunder,lightning, heavy rain or hail |
