Chapter 8 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
What is a domain? A domain is the first coordinate of a relation.
What is a function? A function is having each member of the domain paired with exactly one member of the range.
What is function notation? Using f(x) instead of y.
What is function rule? A function rule is an equation that describes a function.
What is a linear equation? A linear equation is any equation whose graph is a line.
What is a linear inequality? A linear inequality is not equal, it is less than, greater than, greater than or equal to, or less than or equal to.
What is a negative correlation? A negative correlation is a decrease in a set of values as one set of values increases.
What is no correlation? No correlation values show no relationship to each other.
What is positive correlation? Positive correlation is both sets of values increasing.
What is range? Range is the second coordinate in an ordered pair.
What is relation? Relation is the data in a table (set of ordered pairs).
What is a scatter plot? A scatter plot is a graph that shows the relationship between two sets of data.
What is slope? Slope is a ratio that describes the tilt of a line on a graph.
What is slope-intercept form? The equation y = mx + b.
What is a solution? An ordered pair that makes an equation a true statement.
What is a trend line? A trend line on a scatter plot closely fits the data points in a scatter plot.
What is the y-intercept? The y-intercept of the line is the point where the line crosses the y-axis.
