Noun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb
| Term | Definition |

| Common Noun | Classify things into types or general categories. E.g. car, dog, flower |
| Proper Noun | Refer to specific people and paces and are usually written with an initial capital letter. E.g. England, Friday |
| Concrete Noun | Refer to physical things like people, objects and places, things that can be observed and measured. E.g. Guitar, table, clothes |
| Abstract Noun | Refer to ideas, processes, occasions, times and qualities; they can't be touched or seen. E.g. happiness, love, racism |
| Collective Noun | Names a complete group or set of people, animals or things. E.g. Flock of sheep, a gang of youth |
| Descriptive Adjective | Factual and objective description (size, shape, colour) E.g. Big, square, brown |
| Evaluative Adjective | Opinion based description, subjective. E.g. beautiful, funny, best |

| Superlative Adjective | |
| Main Verb | |
| Auxiliary Verb | 'Helping' verbs which assist the main (lexical) verb in a sentence. They always come before a main verb. They help us to express different meaning. E.g. (I have got to be) going soon. |
| Dynamic Verb | Usually tell us that a specific physical, mental or perceptual action is taking place in a sentence. E.g. Kick, speak, put, see |
| Stative Verb | Identify processes or state of being, in which no obvious action takes place. E.g. be, have, was, is, has |
| Primary Auxiliary | These are Be, Have and Do. They can function as either main or auxiliary verbs. Can be used to express: Time scale, questions, negatives, emphasis, attitude. |
| Modal Auxiliary | These cannot be used as the main verbs. They are 9 modal verbs- can, could, should, shall, would, will, may, might, must. |

| Adverb of time | Express the time or duration of an action. E.g. Soon |
| Adverb of manner | Expresses how an action was carried out. E.g. quietly |
| Adverb of place | Expresses the position, direction or distance of an event. E.g. upstairs |
| Adverb of degree (intensifier) | Expresses the intensity of extent to which an action took place. E.g. extremely |
| Adverb of frequency | Expresses how often an action is carried out. E.g regularly |
| Sentence Adverb | Expresses the writer's attitude or connects sentences together. E.g. furthermore |
