Chapter 4 Vocabulary

What is a base? The base is the repeated factor of a number written in exponential form.
What are composite numbers? A composite number is an integer greater than 1 with more than two positive factors.
What is divisible? Divisible means that the remainder is 0 when you divide one integer by another.
What is an equivalent fraction? Equivalent fractions are fractions that describe the same part of a whole.
What is an exponent? An exponent is a number that shows how many times a base is used as a factor.
What is a factor? A factor of a nonzero integer is an integer that divides the nonzero integer with remainder zero.
What is the greatest common factor? The greatest common factor of two or more numbers in which each term after the first is the result of multiplying the previous term by a fixed number.
What is a power? A power is any expression written above the base number. Power is also used to refer to the exponent.
What is prime factorziation? Prime factorization of a number is the expression of the number as the product of its prime factors.
What is a prime number? A prime number is an integer greater than 1 with only two positive factors, 1 and itself.
What is a rational number? A rational number is any number you can write as a quotient of two integers a/b, where b is not zero.
What is scientific notation? Scientific notation is a way of expressing a number
What is simplest form? The simplest form is the form in which the only common factor of the numerator and denominator is 1.
What is standard notation? Standard notation is the usual form for representing a number.
