| simile | a figure of speechthat uses like or as to directly compare two seemingly unlike things |
| personification | a figure of speech in which an animal, object, or idea is given the characteristics of a human being. |
| foreshadowe | the use of clues by an author to prepare the reader for future developments in the story, novel, or play |
| theme | the main idea of a literary work, usually expressed as a generalization |
| autobiography | the story of a person's life written by that person |
| biography | the story of a person's life written by someone other than that person |
| exposition | the type of writing that presents facts or explains ideas |
| dialect | the special form of speech that belongs to a particular group or region |
| symbolism | something that symbolizes something else |
| anecdote | a brief account of a true even, meant to add depth and color to writing. |
| irony | a difference between the way things seem to be than the way they really are |
| climax | the point of the reader's highest interest and emotional involovement in a story, novel, or play |
| myth | an ancient anonymous story that conveys the beliefs and ideals of a culture and usually involves gods and goddesses |
| hero | the central character in a work of literature |
| flashback | in a narrative, a scene that breaks the normal time order of the plot to show an event that happened in the past |
| interal conflict | a struggle that takes place within a character's mind |
| external conflict | a character's struggle against an outside force, such as nature, fate, or another person |
