Literary Devices
List of literary devices and their definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Personification | When an object-or animal-it's given human attributes. ex- The wind whispered through dry grass |
| Sentence- Length Variation | The purposeful use varying length of sentences for a desired effect |
| Simile | A comparison using the words 'like' or 'as' ex- our soldiers are as strong as lions |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two things that are unrelated but share common characteristics ex- the skies of his future began to darken |
| Diction | Style of speaking or writing determined by the writer or speaker |
| Paradox | a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true. ex- "the mingling of deciduous trees with elements of desert flora forms a fascinating ecological paradox" |
| Syntax | A set of rules in a language. It dictates how words from different parts of speech are put together in order to convey complete thought. |
| Oxymoron: | A figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect ex- Open secret, Awfully pretty, liquid gas |
| Antecdent | A phrase or a word which a pro noun or another word refers back to ex- my uncle likes candy. HE requests everyone to give HIM candies as a gift. |
| Imagery | to use figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that appeals to our physical senses ex- It was DARK and DIM in the forest |
| Allusion | A brief reference to a historical figure ex- "Don't be a Romeo in front of her" |
| Anecdote | a short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person. ex- "the short Anecdote added humor to his paper" |
| Tone | Attitude the writer portrays towards a subject or the audience. |
