3 ways to write a division problem – dividend ÷divisor = quotient divisor)dividend quotient on top…… dividend/divisor = quotient
absolute value – the distance of a number from zero on a number line
additive inverse – the sum when you add opposites will always be 0 4 + -4 = 0
area – the number of square units needed to cover a given surface
average – mean, add and divide by number of members
denominator – the number of pieces that will make a whole.
difference – the result when one number is subtracted from another.
divide – to split into equal groups
dividend – the number being split up x ÷ n = p x is the dividend
divisor – the number doing the splitting/cutting x ÷ n = p n is the divisor
estimate – a close answer by rounding or using compatible numbers
evaluate – to find the value (answer) of a numerical or algebraic expression.
expression – a mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables
factor – any number that is multiplied by another number to get a product.
fraction – a division problem where the numerator is divided by the denominator
improper fraction – fractions that have a greater numerator than denominator simplify by dividing
integer – any whole number or their opposite—no parts no pieces
mixed number – a non-zero whole number and a fraction (horse shoe to simplify)
negative number – number less than zero. includes parts and pieces
numerator – the top number in a fraction, tells how many pieces are being used in question.
opposites – two numbers that are equal distance from zero on a number line
order of operations – rule for evaluating expressions (PEMDAS)
product – the result when two or more numbers are multiplied
quotient – the result when one number is divided by another
rational number – any number that can be expressed as a fraction or quotient of two integers.
reciprocal – two numbers whose product is one ¾ x ? is 1…….4/3 is the reciprocal
simplify – to write in simplest form
sum – result when one number or numbers is added to another
variable – a symbol used to represent a quantity that can change
venn diagram – a drawing that shows how members are related
whole number – 0, 1, 2, 3… no parts no pieces no negatives
