Functions Vocabulary

function vocabulary

Relation A set of ordered pairs
Function A relation that each domain element with EXACTLY ONE range element - each input has one output
Independent Variable In a function, the "x" variable, or input, which can take on any value you choose
Dependent Variable In a function, the "y" variable, or output, which happens as a result of the function
Domain The set of all inputs or "x" values
Range The set of all outputs or "y" values
Continuous A function all in one piece, with no breaks or gaps
Discrete A function with individual, distinct points
Vertical Line Test If a vertical line NEVER touches the graph of a relation in more than one place, then it is a function, because all of the inputs have EXACTLY ONE output
