Docutase Sodium - stool softener for constipation -Side Effects: bloating, cramping, diarrhea
Cyclosporine - immuno-suppressant helps to prevent organ rejection - do not take w/ grapefruit juice - lifelong therapy
Citalopram -SSRI used to treat anxiety and deppression - Side effects: G.I, decreased libido, weight gain, increased risk for suicide -takes a few weeks to work - Do not abruptly stop medication
Valcyclovir - antiviral drug used to treat herpes - can also treat shingles, chicken pox, and cold sores. - does not cure disease but can prevent outbreaks
Ondansetron - helpes to relieve nausea - sublinguinal, tablet, IV - can take this prophylactically.
Ceftriaxone - antibiotic that treats gram negative bacteria -cephalosporin - side effects: site irritation, anaphylaxis - IM injection, IV
Propofol - initiates conscious sedation -CNS depression, given in controlled environment (ICU, pre-op) -monitor respirations, HR, BP, oxygen
Tramadol - pain reliever that treats mod to severe pain -side effects: constipation, drowsiness, abuse potential -take as prescribed
Metformin -oral anti-diabetic medication -side effects: nephrotoxic, renal irritation, rxn with contrast dye, lactic acidosis - A1C level used to monitor DM control
Diphenhydramine - antihistamine to treat symptoms of allergic reactions - IV (also p.o. and I.M.) - side effects: drowsiness, dry mouth
Morphine Sulfate - opioid used for severe pain -side effects: constipation, CNs depression, respiratory depression, abuse potential, sedation
Haloperidol - anti-psychotic long acting - side effects: EPS, sedation - can treat turettes, schizophrenia, psychosis, sun downers
Insulin Lispro - rapid acting diabetic medication - onset: 15 minutes. peak: 30-1.5 hours. - given w/food (recheck q 4-5 hours)
Hydrocodone/acetaminophen - for severe pain - side effects: kidneys/G.I. CNS depression, abuse potential
Triamcinolone - contact dermititis - topical cream - no systemic side effects - do not over use, apply thin layer, wash before application
Esmeprozole -PPI - can prevent ulcers and GERD -side effects: diarrhea, hypomagnesium - take before eating -usually used for prevention
Fexofenadine -allergic rhinitis - side effects: dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation - drink water, use eye drops, take during allergy season
Insuline Glargine - Basal insulin once a day
Gabapentin - anti-epileptic -side effects: dry mouth, drowsiness -also treats DM neuropathic symptoms
Fentanyl - severe pain -50-100 times stronger than morphine -CNS depression
Emtrietabine -post exposure prophylaxis - take for one month -HIV status safely determined after 6 months
Kayexalate - lowers potassium - side effects: diarrhea, hypokalemia -pt. teaching: pt on telemetry
Alprazolam -PRN med for anxiety - side effects: drowsiness, abuse potential, sedation
Prednisone - decreases inflammation. -steroid - used for bronchitis - side effects: hyperglycemia, wt gain, irritability, insomnia -take in morning and w. food
Methylprednisolone IV corticosteroid
