2017-2018 Pre-Algebra Algebra vocabulary

TermDefinition
Algebraic expression numbers, symbols, and/or operations grouped together that show the value of something
Algebraic inequality An inequality that contains at lease one variable
Domain of a function the set of all possible input values of a function
Equivalent expression two or more expressions that have the same values for all values of the variables
Function an input-output relationship that has exactly one output for each input
Inequality a mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are not equal
Like term two or more terms that have the same variables raised to the same power
Linear equation an equation whose solution form a straight line on a coordinate plane
Linear function a function whose graph is a straight line
Percent of change the amount stated as a percent that a number increases or decreases
Range of a function the set of all output values of a function
Rate of change a ratio that compares the amount of change in a dependent variable to the amount of change in an independent variable
Scale The ratio of the length in a drawing or model to the length of the real thing
Scale factor a ratio used to enlarge or reduce similar figures
Slope a measure of the steepness of a line on a graph; the rise divided by the run
Term the parts of an expression that are added or subtracted
