2017-2018 Pre-Algebra Number Sense Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Absolute value a number's distance from zero
Additive inverse What you add to a number to get zero
Associate Property For all real numbers, the sum or the product is always the same, regardless of their grouping
Commutative Property For all real numbers, can be added or multiplied in any order without changing the answer
Constant A fixed value; a value that does not change
Distributive property For all real numbers, multiplying a number by a group of numbers that added or subtracted is the same as doing each multiplication separately
Irrational number a number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers or as a repeating or terminating decimal
Perfect square a number that has integers as its square roots
Proportion two ratios that are equal
Rate A ratio that compares two quantities measured in different units
Real numbers a rational or irrational number
Scientific notation a method of writing very large or very small numbers by using powers of 10
Simplify to perform all possible operations, including combining like terms; to write a fraction or expression in simplest terms
Square root a number that is multiplied by itself to form a product
