| acetabulum | The large circular cavity in each side of the pelvis that articulates with the head of the femur to form the hip joint, AKA hip socket |
| Allogenic | originating within another |
| ankylosing spondylitis | A form of rheumatoid arthritis that primarily causes inflammation of the joints between the vertebrae |
| arthrodesis | The surgical fusion (joining together) of two bones to stiffen a joint, such as an ankle, elbow or shoulder |
| costochondritis | An inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum |
| hemopoietic | related to formation of blood cells |
| lordosis | An abnormal increase in the forward curvature of the lumbar spine |
| kyphosis | An abnormal increase in the outward curvature of the thoracic spine as viewed from the side |
| osteomyelitis | An inflammation of the bone marrow and adjacent bone |
| osteomalacia | abnormal softening of bones in adults |
| scoliosis | An abnormal lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine |
| synovectomy | The surgical removal of a synovial membrane from a joint |
| subluxation | the partial displacement of a bone from its joint |
| osteonecrosis | The death of bone tissue due to insufficient blood supply |
| spondylolisthesis | The forward slipping movement of the body of one of the lower lumbar vertebrae on the vertebra or sacrum below it |
| spondylitis | inflammation of the vertebrae |
| arthroplasty | The surgical placement of an artificial joint |
| orthotic | a mechanical appliance, such as a shoe insert, which is specially designed to control, correct, or compensate for impaired limb function |
| prosthesis | a substitute for a diseased or missing body part, such as a leg that has been amputated |
| hallux valgus | A medical term for the condition commonly known as a bunion (an abnormal enlargement of the joint at the base of the great toe) |
| callus | The bulging deposit that forms around the area of the break during the healing of a fractured bone |
| percutaneous vertebroplasty | performed to treat osteoporosis-related compression fractures. |
| Paget's disease | A chronic bone disease that is characterized by the abnormal breakdown of bone followed by abnormal bone formation |
| arthrolysis | The surgical procedure for loosening of an ankylosed joint |
| Rickets | cRickets is a deficiency disease in CHILDREN, characterized by defective bone growth resulting from a lack of vitamin D and calcium |
| osteoarthritis | the medical term for the form of arthritis that is commonly known as wear-and-tear arthritis |
| osteopenia | thinner-than-average bone density |
| craniotomy | performed to gain access to the brain or to relieve intracranial pressure. |
| myeloma | A type of cancer that occurs in blood-making cells found in the red bone marrow |
| greenstick fracture | fracture in which the bone is bent and only partially broken. This type of fracture occurs primarily in children |
