Terms for the Multiple Choice and Essays Sections

QuestionAnswer
An argument that appeals to emotion rather than reason; feelings rather than intellect ad hominem argument
Characters or elements symbolize an abstraction besides the literal meaning allegory
Repetition of sounds, particually the intial consonants of consecutive words alliteration
A direct or indirect reference to something well known; can be an event, book, myth, place, work of art allusion

Word, phrase, or clause refered to by a pronoun antecedent
A statement which expresses a general truth or moral principle; a memorable summation of the author's point aphorism
A figure of speech that addresses an absent or imaginary person or abstraction apostrophe
The emotional mood of the entire work created by how the setting and objects are described- often foreshadows atmospereh
a subject and a verb clause
Slang or informalities in writing; gives writing a conversational tone colloquial
A fanciful expression; often an extended metaphor or an unusual analogy conceit
The nonliteral, associative meaning of a word; the implied or suggested meaning connotation
