Habitual actions in the past: I used to eat breakfast at 8 every day and then I walked to school
Actions in progress in the past: We were living in Houston with my cousin (no clear indicator of when this ended)
Telling the time in the past: It was usually ten at night when we would eat dinner
Emotional or physical conditions in the Past: We were all very happy and no one got sick that year. We felt very fortunate.
Ongoing weather actions in the past: It rained a lot during that time (versus It rained on tuesday)
Telling someone's age in the past: She was fifteen that year
There are no ____ in the imperfect tense stem changes
-Ar verb endings: aba, abas, aba, ábamos, abais, aban
-Ir/-Er verb endings: ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían
Ir: iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban
Ser: era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran
Ver veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían
Uses of the Imperfect tense: describe habitual or routine past actions, focus on the duration of the event, describes past actions, describes ongoing background events that were interrupted by another event
Uses of the preterite tense: relates a completed past action or series of completed past actions, focuses on the beginning or end of an event, relates a completed past action (usually includes a time period), an action that interrupted an ongoing action
Phrases associated with the imperfect tense: generalmente / por lo general (generally, in general), normalmente (normally), todos los dias/meses/anos (every day, month, year), todas las semanas (every week), frecuentemente (frequently), typically
Phrases associated with the preterite tense: de repente (suddenly), por fin (finally), ayer (yesterday), ___ pasada (last whatever), una vez / dos veces (one time, two times).
Querer, poder, conocer, saber ___ change meaning in the imperfect like they do in the preterite do not
