Basic Integer Rules

A negative times a negative is a….? Positive Ex: -4 x -5 = 20 -3 x -2 = 6
A negative times a positive is a …. ? Negative Ex: -4 x 5 = -20 3 x -2 = -6
A positive times a positive is a ….? Positive Ex: 4 x 5 = 20 3 x 2 = 6
Same signs means... Plus or positive
Different signs means... Minus or negative
What does double signs mean? When you have two signs next to each other. Examples: 5 - (-4) 9 + (-2)
What do you do with double signs? Circle them, and change them to one sign, then re-write. Same signs= plus, different signs= minus
When adding and subtracting integers, how do you know what the sign of the answer should be? The answer takes the sign of the bigger number.
When adding and subtracting integers, how do you know if you should really add or if you should really subtract? 1. Simplify double signs 2. If they have different signs, you subtract the two numbers. 3. If they have the same signs, you add the two numbers.
