addend any number that is added in addition
angle where two sides meet in a figure
area the measure of a figure or surface in square units
area model a rectangular model made of square tiles
array a set of objects arranged in rows that each have the same number of objects
associative property of addition the property that states that the addends can be grouped in different ways and the sum will be the same
associative property of multiplication the property that states that the factors can be grouped in different ways and the product will be the same
bar graph a graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to show data
benchmark a known amount used to make comparisons EX: 1 gram, 1 kilogram
capacity the amount a container can hold
commutative property of addition the property that states that the order of the addends can change and the sum will be the same
commutative property of multiplication the property that states the order of the factors can change and the product will be the same
data information collected about people or things
denominator the bottom number of a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in the whole; 2/3 has a denominator of 3
difference the result of a subtraction problem
distributive property of multiplication the property that states that one factor in a multiplication problem can be broken into two addends, then each addend can be multiplied by the other factor and, finally, the two products can be added; EX: 4x11=4x(8+3) =(4x8) + (4x3) =32 + 12 =44
dividen the number being divided
division an operation that can be used to find the number of equal groups or the number of objects in each group
divisor the number by which another number is divided 18/3=6; 3 is the divisor
elapsed time the amount of timw that passes from the beginning to the end of an activity
equal groups two or more groups that have the same number of objects
equation a number sentence that shows that the value on both sides of the equal sign are the same
equivalent fractions two or more fractions that name the same part or amount but have different numerators and denominators
estimate to find about how many or about how mucn
even number a whole number that has a 0,2,4,6,8 in the ones place
expanded form a way of writing a number as a sum of the values of its digits
factor a number multiplied by another number to find a product
fraction a number that names part of a whole or part of a group
gram (g) a metric unit of measure for mass; a feather has a mass of about 1 of these
hour (hr) a unit of time; =60 minutes
inverse operations two operations that can be used to undo one another, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division
is equal to (=) a symbol that means that one number is equal to another number
is greater than (>) a symbol that means that one number is less than another number
is less than (<) a symbol that means that one number is less than another number
key the part of a picture graph that tells how much each picture stands for
kilogram (kg) a metric unit of measure for mass; a math book has a mass of about 1 of these
line plot a graph that shows data n a number line
liquid volume the capacity of a container or the amount of liquid a container can hold
liter (L) a metric unit of measure for capacity; a water bottle holds 1 of these
mass the amount of matter in an object
milliliter (mL) a metric unit of measure for capacity; a spoon holds about 5 or these
minuend the number being subtracted from; 15-7=8; the 15 is this
minute (min) a unit of time; 60 of these in 1 hour
multiple a number that is the product of two counting numbers; EX: 4,8,12,16,20
multiple of 10 a number that is the product of 10 and a counting number EX: 10,20,30,40...
numerator the top number of a fraction that tells how many equal parts of the whole are shaded or counted; 5/8 has 5 for this
odd number a whole number that has a 1,3,5,7,9 in the ones place
pattern an ordered set of numbers, shapes, or objects
perimeter the distance around a figure
picture graph a graph that uses symbols or pictures to show data
place value the value of a digit based on its position in a number
polygon a closed figure with three or more line segments as sides
product the result of multiplying two or more numbers
quadrilateral a polygon with four sides and four angles
quotient the result of a division problem
rectangle a quadrilateral with 4 square corners and opposite sides that are the same length
regroup to replace an amount with another amount of the same vaue; 10 tens regrouped as 1 hundred
rhombus a quadrilateral with all 4 sides the same length
round to find a number close to a given number
rule tells how numbers in a pattern related; EX: 8,12,16,20,24 (add 4)
scale equally spaced numbers that show values on a grapoh
square a quadrilateral with 4 square corners and 4 sides that are the same length
standard form a way of writing numbers using digits 0-9, with each digit having a place value
subtrahend the number being subtracted from another number; 16-9=7; 9 is this number
sum the result of adding two or more numbers
unit fraction one part of a whole when the whole is divided into equal parts
unit square a square with side lengths of 1 unit
word form a way of writing numbers using words 215--EX: Two hundred fifteen
