cataloging terms

any element of the record resulting in card being added to the catalogue- alphabetically sorted- any part searchable access points
single specific term for a person place subject title to maintain consistency between access points with a catalog- prevents users from having to search for multiple variations of a title author subject or term authority control
bibliographic record created by library of congress prior to its publication- CIP- appears printed on the verso of the book's title page cataloging in publication
top part of the call number which stands for subject matter- systems are Dewey and Library of Congress classification numbers
bibliographic and physical description of a book recording or other work accounting for such items as performer title edition and imprint as opposed to subject content descriptive cataloging
the name of publisher distributor manufacturer etc and the place of publication distribution manufacture etc of a bibliographic item- can be found at 260 tag in MARC record imprint
refers to first author named on the item if no author then title of work is used main entry
standard format for the arrangement of cataloging info so that it can be stored and retrieved using computer tapes MARC record
for machine readable records you input a new master record catalogued according to current cataloging practices and Anglo American Catalging Rules and Resource Description and Access Original Cataloging
a machine readable record exists - you modify the record for local use and create a copy of the record with your modifications copy cataloging
may take the form of classification or subject indexing and involves the assignment of a given document to a class in a classification system subject cataloging

terminology from the card catalog- control card for the item- allows them to follow through catalog- in electronic catalog it can be used to refer to the set of added entries tracings
