New Terms introduced in Unit 2

TermDefinition
Interquartile range A range of values in the middle 50% of all the data values.
Median A number that divides ordered data into two halves. It is equal to the 50th percentile and the 2nd quartile.
Outliers An observation that does not fit the rest of the data.
Percentiles A number that divides ordered data into hundredths; example: A person may be told they are in the 60th percentile for height.
Quartiles A number that divides ordered data into quarters: A company may be in the top 25 percent for profits.
Graphs Visual representations of data
Pie Charts Pie shaped chart with portions representing data based on categories
Bar Charts Chart with separate bars representing the percent or count for each category of a variable
Histograms Chart with connecting bars representing the ranges of data for a continuous numerical variable.
Time Series Line chart representing changes of data values over time.
Measures of Location Descriptive statistics including maximum and minimum values, percentiles, quartiles, median, and interquartile range.
Misleading Graphs Graphs that misrepresent data, sometimes to intentionally sway opinions.
Box Plots A visual of the location of values for a continuous variable.
