Traits/Behaviors and Life Cycles

TermDefinition
life cycle the stages of an organisms life from birth to death
complete metamorphosis a type of insect development consisting of four stages: Egg, larva, pupa, adult.
incomplete metamorphosis a type of insect development consisting of three stages: Egg, nymph, adult.
egg the first stage of many life cycles. Egg comes from the adult
larva the second stage of complete metamorphosis; it eats a lot and grows; it is "worm-like" in appearance
pupa the third stage of complete metamorphosis; it is at "rest" and the body is changing
adult the last stage in a life cycle; organism is able to reproduce.
nymph the second stage of incomplete metamorphosis; it looks like a small adult.
cocoon/ chrysalis the protective covering of a moth or butterfly pupa.
trait is a characteristic of an organism that can be either: physical (what it looks like) or behavioral (how it acts)
inherited trait a characteristic that is passed from parents to offspring during reproduction
learned behavior a behavior that is developed from being taught or instructed.
offspring the new organism that comes from adult parents (a baby)
heredity the passing of characteristics from one generation (parents) to the next generation (offspring)
instinct an inherited behavior that an organism "just knows how to do" something.
acquired trait character developed in an individual as a result of environmental influence, like scars, broken bones, cuts. These traits are not inherited and therefore cannot be passed on to future generations.
stage one of a series of positions or stations in a life cycle
tadpole the aquatic larva of a frog
froglet the immature frog; has lungs and legs but still has a tail
seed the part of a plant that can grow into a new plant
seedling a young plant that grows from a seed
flower the part of the plant that makes seeds
fruit the part of the flowering plant that contains seeds
pollination the movement of pollen in the flower
