Study Guide Chp 8

QuestionAnswer
What happens during the Zygote phase of pregnancy? The cells rapidly increase in number or proliferate.
WWha is cytodifferentiation? The development of different cells.
What is morphodifferentiation? The development of different forms.
What happens during the mesoderm phase of embryonic development?
The second layer the mesoderm differentiaties into the lining of the abdominal cavity, bones, muscles, circulatory system, reproductive, internal organs, dentin, cementum and pulp of the teeth.
What is histodifferentiation? The development of different tissues.
What is proliferation? The cap stage in the life cyclevof a tooth where the primary embryonic ectoderm layer matures into enamel of the developing tooth.
What are odontoblasts? Cells that form dentin.
What are the Lines of Retzius? Appear as incremental lines or bands around the layers, much like the growth rings on a tree.
What is peritublar dentin? the dentin that creates the wall of the dentinal tubule.
What is secondary dentin? Forms after the completion of the apical foreman and slowly throughout the life of the tooth.
Where is cementum the thickest? If the tooth is traumatized due to force from the occlusal or incisal surface, a condition known as hypercementosis may take place. Causing thickening at the apex.
What is alveolar crest? Two cortical bone plates come together between each tooth.
What is gingival hyperplasia? Certain drugs can affect the gingiva and cause gingival hyperplasia, overgrowth of tissue.
How many weeks elapse from the first day of the pregnant woman's last period? 40 weeks
What are some signs/symptoms that occur during the first trimester? Absence of a menstrual period, the breast swell and become tender, nausea, and vomiting.
What is a joint? Where two or more bones meet or form a junction. Composed of fibrous connective tissue and cartilage.
What is osteoporosis? The loss of bony material, thus leaving the bones brittle and soft.
Where is the retromandibular vein formed? Frequently formed within the parotid gland.
What is made up of two sections of bone joined at the median suture? Maxilla
What is the hardest living tissue in the body? Enamel
Where can developmental marks appear in a tooth? Enamel and dentin
Why is tetracycline harmful for tooth development? High concentrations of tetracycline antibiotics taken during the time the tooth was developing will cause staining. The stain varies in color from light green or yellow to dark gray-brown.
________ is the study of prenatal growth and development. Embryology
During the ______ phase the development of various tissues take place. Histodifferentiation
In which week of prenatal development with the face begin to form? Fourth week
In the facial development phase which embryonic layer is responsible for forming the cheeks sides of the upper lip and maxilla? Medial nasal
Which factors can intiate malformation in the unborn child? Genetics infections environment
Fetal alcohol syndrome(fas) in an infant is the result of the mother? Petsisting in alcohol consumption
If a cleft lip occurs on both sides of the lip it is called? Bilateral
The first stage of the life cycle of the tooth is called? Odontogenesis
Enamel forming cells are called? Ameloblasts
The last development stage before eruption is? Calcification
The final stage of the life cycle of the tooth? Attrition
The study of the microscopic structure and function of tissues is? Histology
Primary teeth may erupt with a covering over the enamel called? Nasmyths membrane
What is softer than enamel but harder than cementum and bone? Dentin
_______ tubules pass through the entire surface of the dentin. Dentinal
The most pronounced stained contour line which occurs due to trauma of birth is? Neonatal
The functions of the pulp? Nourishment, support the dentin, maintenance for the dentin, transmits sensory information to the brain, identify temperature changes, identify chemical changes.
The pulp is partially made from _____ Which are cells from which connective tissue evolves. Fibroblasts
If the pulp is damaged due to an injury the tissue may become inflamed causing? Pulpitis
The _____ consist of portions of the tooth structure supporting hard and soft dental tissues and the alveolar bone. Periodontium
The characteristics of cementum? Lighter than dentin darker than enamel.
The collagen fibers that act as anchors between the alveolar bonecand teeth are called? Sharpeys fibers
The bonescof the mandible and the maxilla are formed by? Osteoblasts
The cells that remodel and resorb bone are called? Osteoclasts
The tooth bearing extended areas of bone in each arch are called the? Alveolar process
At the _____ two cortical bone plates come together between each tooth. Alveolar crest
On a dental radiograph the radiopaque line or ______ represents the thin compact alveolus bone lining the socket. Lamina dura
The periodontal ligament likevall connective tissuevis formed by _____ cells. Fibroblast
Characteristics of healthy gingiva? Firm tissue surrounding the teeth Stippled texture Can be attached to underlying bone
Free gingiva is also known as ____ gingiva. Marginal
The mucogingival junction is the line of demarcation between the _____ gingiva and the ______ mucosa. Attached, alveolar
The space between the unattached gingiva and the tooth is the? Gingival sulcus
In the floor of the gingiva sulcus _____ the attachment attaches to the enamel surface of the teeth. Epithelial
In a healthy mouth the gingival sulcus space would not exceed _____ millimeters in depth. 2 to 3
