Chapter 7: Listening

Task Oriented (Listening style) most concerned with efficiency and accomplishing the task at hand (time is valuable)
Relational (Listening style) concerned with building emotional closeness with others (caring)
Analytical (Listening style) concerned about people attending to the full message before coming to a judgment
Appreciative (Listening types) personal enjoyment
Comprehensive (Listening type) informational
Critical (Listening type) strong desire to evaluate messages; evidence
Empathetic (Listening type) thoughts and feelings of another person
Hearing (component) the physiological aspect of listening
Attending (component) the psychological process of selection (learning what to listen to)
Understanding (component) using knowledge about the source of the message and the context of the message
Remembering (component) the number of times the information is repeated, how much information there is to store, and whether the information can be "rehearsed"
Responding (component) giving observable feedback to the speaker
Silence (response) staying attentive and nonverbal without offering any verbal feedback
Questioning (response) occurs when the listener asks the speaker for addition information
Paraphrasing (response) feedback that restates the message you thought the speaker sent
Empathizing (response) used when the listener wants to identify with the speaker
Supporting (response) reveals the listener's solidarity with the speaker's situation (you agree and can help)
Analyzing (response) the listener offers an interpretation of a speaker's message
Evaluating (response) appraises the sender's thoughts or behaviors in some way
Advising (response) when the listener gives advice to the speaker about the situation
Challenges of Listening information overload, personal concerns, rapid thought, noise
Pseudolistening listener may pretend to pay attention (keep eye contact, smile, nod)
Stage Hogging people are interested in only expressing their ideas and don't care about what anyone else has to say
Selective Listening people respond only to the speaker's remarks that interests them
Filling in the Gaps what they remember makes the whole story
Insulated Listening instead of looking for something in the conversation, these listeners avoid something (stop listening when not interested)
Defensive Listening taking innocent comments as personal attacks
Ambushing listens carefully to you but only because they are collecting information to use against you later
